Nursery New Starters
We are looking forward to meeting you all and working with you to give your child the best start at Nursery. Below you can find lots of useful information about your child starting Nursery. If you have any further questions, which are not answered here, please do contact us. We are always happy to help!
Please see the 'Starting Nursery' booklet below which has lots of information that you will need to know before your child starts at Barnby Road Academy.
Transition Information
We know that many parents/carers will be anxious about their child starting Nursery. Children will usually come to visit with their parent/carer during a drop-in session. Usually children then have one shorter, 1.5 hour session before staying for the full 3 hour session. If your child is struggling, please speak to Mrs Brian/Mrs Weston/Mrs Cove who will discuss a bespoke transition for your child.
Milk, Fruit & Lunchtime

Your child is entitled to free milk at Nursery. Please make sure you register for your child to receive milk on the ‘Cool Milk’ website below.

In Nursery all children are offered a piece of fruit /vegetable each day as part of the National Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. The children will be offered a range of fruits/vegetables throughout the week e.g. apples, bananas, apples, pears, carrots, sugar snap peas. We ask you not to provide alternative snacks as we are a healthy school, unless your child stays for the full day.
30-hours

Children can bring a packed lunch, or order a school dinner with staff on arrival. Children will eat their lunch in the hall with familiar staff, before having a play in Roisin's Garden afterwards. NB - There is an additional charge for lunchtime supervision, which will be added to ParentPay.
Children who stay for the full day at Nursery can also bring an additional healthy snack with them for the afternoon, should you wish.
Nursery Clothing/Uniform
At Barnby Road Nursery you have the choice of sending your child in their own clothing or in school uniform. The children can get messy when they are playing and learning. Although protective aprons are used in nursery, we cannot promise to avoid all accidents so we recommend that children do not come in ‘special’ or ‘best’ clothes!

Many parents choose to send their children in Barnby Road uniform as it helps prepare them for school, makes them feel part of the school and avoids messing children’s ‘home’ clothes. Children can wear grey, charcoal or black trousers/skirts/pinafores with black/blue/grey shoes. In the summer, children can wear blue and white checked dresses or grey/black shorts. White polo shirts can be worn with a royal blue jumper or cardigan. Items with the school logo can be ordered from www.wrigleprint.co.uk - go into ‘our products’, then ‘school/education’, click on the Barnby Road Academy picture and enter the login wpbra2019.
Please be aware that we have a strict no jewellery policy at Barnby Road Academy. Small stud earrings and a watch are the only items permitted.
In Nursery we spend a lot of time learning outdoors, even when it is cold and a little drizzly. Your child should be equipped with suitable clothing for the changing weather; a hooded coat, scarf, mittens and hat on cold days and a sun hat and sun cream on hot days (we recommend applying a long lasting sun screen before Nursery). We may sometimes request that your child bring wellies to Nursery to avoid getting muddy on wet days!
Your child will have their own peg where their coat and a bag of spare clothes, if needed, may be kept throughout the session. The children will be encouraged to find their coat for outdoor play or home time by themselves to aid independence.
Getting Ready for Nursery
Starting Nursery can be a very daunting time for many children and parents. Often children will not have spent very much time away from home and it can be difficult for them to say goodbye to their parents/carers initially. They do tend to settle quite quickly and we will always contact you if they don't settle after a short period of time. The staff are very experienced with this and will support you with your child's transition.
Children are often used to having an adult to help them with simple tasks e.g. putting on their coat, using the toilet, washing their hands. When at Nursery, we encourage children to develop their independence as much as possible. At home they may have an adult to help them at all times. However, at Nursery each adult is looking after 13 children so it is very helpful if you can start to encourage your child to become more independent with tasks as they start Nursery.
Have a look at the documents below to see how you can help your child to settle into Nursery.
Starting Nursery Dates
The school office will provide you with your child's individual starting date a few weeks before they are due to start at our Nursery. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about this.
