Reception New Starters (September 2026)
We are looking forward to meeting you all and working with you to give your child the best start at school. You can find the 'starting school' booklet which has lots of information that you will need to know before your child starts at Barnby Road Academy. Below you can find lots of useful information about your child starting school. If you have any further questions, which are not answered here, please do contact us. We are always happy to help!
Transition & Class Information
We believe that transition should be a process rather than an event to ensure that children can move smoothly and happily into a new setting. To ease transition we have to split the process into 3 steps:
- Children meet their new class teacher for three play/story sessions in their new environment in July.
- Children have the opportunity to explore their new environment and are introduced to lunchtime with some half day sessions in September.
- Children attend school for the full day.
Transition dates for AM Nursery Children

These play/story times will take place during your child’s current Nursery sessions; they should attend Nursery as usual.
Transition dates for PM Nursery Children

These play/story times will take place during your child’s current Nursery sessions; they should attend Nursery as usual.
Transition dates for 30 Hour Nursery Children

These play/story times will take place during your child’s current Nursery sessions; they should attend Nursery as usual.
Transition dates for Children who do not attend Barnby Road Nursery

During these sessions your child will have the opportunity to meet some of the other children who will be in their class and get to know the staff that will be working with them in September. These sessions are vital for your child; they allow your child to gradually adjust to their new environment so that they feel comfortable and confident when they start in September. Please try bring your child to one of the sessions on each day.
Milk & Fruit

Your child will be entitled to free milk until their fifth birthday, however you will still be able to purchase milk after your child has turned five. Please make sure you register for your child to receive milk on the ‘Cool Milk’ website below.

In YR children are offered a piece of fruit/vegetable each day as part of the National Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. The children will be offered a range of fruits/vegetables throughout the week e.g. apples, bananas, apples, pears, carrots, sugar snap peas. We ask you not to provide alternative snacks as we are a healthy school.

Getting Ready for School

Starting school can be a daunting time for many children and parents. Often children are used to having an adult to help them with simple tasks e.g. putting on shoes, fastening their coat, finding their bag. When children start school there are less adults available, and we encourage children to develop independence.
The document below will give you some guidance on activities and skills to practise before your child starts school to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Starting School Dates
As part of our transition process the children will stay for some half days to ease them in to the school day and to help them get used to the lunchtime arrangements. We find that this is best for the children and helps them settle into the new rules and routines of school. This year we will also be splitting each class into two smaller groups for the first few days to help them to transition into their new classroom. You can see when the children start on the table below.
